On the bright side, such a short example will probably be very helpful
to detect the problem.

Note that the memory is not constantly increasing: it jumps:
sage: R.<x>=QQ[]
sage: n=0
sage: M=get_memory_usage()
sage: while(1):
....:     if get_memory_usage()>M:
....:         M = get_memory_usage()
....:         print n
....:     n+=1
....:     f=x+1
....:
