It doesn't have to be an earlier version of Sage. The downloads page that I see lists sage-4.3.1-OSX-10.5-i386-64bit-i386-Darwin.dmg sage-4.3.1-OSX10.4-32bit-i386-Darwin.dmg sage-4.3.1-OSX-10.6-i386-Darwin.dmg You want the first of these, and I think you said that you downloaded the last of them. (This may not really have been your fault: Sage 4.3.1 is rather new, and sometimes it takes a while for binaries for all supported systems to make it to the download page.
