The choice between a and an isn't so simple because it depends on the initial sound of the word rather than the initial letter. A quick search came up with http://www.wordinfo.info/words/index/info/view_unit/3431 which seems accurate enough. In a nutshell, 'an' is used if the word starts with a vowel sound. As a first approximation, it includes a,e,i,o,u but also words with an unstressed h.
