Were you trying to use Sage from the command line interface or through
the notebook graphical interface? If you want to use Sage from the
command line interface, then from the terminal window navigate to the
top most Sage directory (i.e. SAGE_ROOT) and do

./sage

If you want to use the notebook interface, once you started Sage from
the command line then do

sage: notebook()

>From the error message you described above, I gather that the latter
command gave the error message, right?
