In Canada, it costs C$400 (about US$330) to buy one without a contract.
I imagine you can do the same in the U.S., probably for less.  And you
could get yourself a dev phone, which gives root access.

Could the sage notebook be modified to give more details in the error
message?  (Maybe if invoked with debug=True?)
