If he does not have a fixed IP address, dyndns.org allows him to have a
permanent domain name associated with dynamic IP address. Many modern
modems/routers will automatically update dyndns.org, whenever the IP
address changes.

In fact I use that when I'm at my Dads, where I want to access my home
machine. Whilst my home machine has a fixed IP address, my Dads does
not. So I update my firewall rules automatically on my home machine from
a script, so SSH is only permitted from my Dad's IP address, not every
IP address in the world. I know SSH is pretty secure, but no harm in
making it more secure.

I've also found 'nohup' useful if running a program from a remote
location, as the session does not abort if the connection dies.
