It complains about a non-existing directory. And that sounds a lot
like the build directory on William's machine. Did you install Sage
into some global directory like /usr?

The env variable is only change inside Sage or when you run "sage -
sh". If you installed Sage into /usr you might have overwritten part
of the system R, but that can hardly be called Sage's fault.
