Another option for people upgrading from sage-3.0.6 to sage-3.1.2
using the vmware image is just to do this:

(1) login to the vmware image using
   login: manage
(2) type at the prompt
   sudo su
(3) type
   sage -upgrade
(4) wait a few hours

It turns out that upgrading the vmware image from sage-3.0.6 to
sage-3.1.2 using the "build from source" automated method
works just fine.  (At least, it did for me.)
