So I am back to square one. At the moment I went into the last file in the traceback: sage/local/ lib/python2.5/site-packages/twisted/python/util.py and put in a statement to set setgroups and getgroups to None. If I understand the comments, this forces the case where the OS does not support this. My initial test is that this works but I have no idea what the side effects might be.
