Hi Mike, Thanks for your feedback. Pity, I thought I omitted something obvious.
For some reason, Mathematica and Maple seem to do better at solving such equations, even though the results can become a bit convoluted. Sometimes, SAGE manages to solve an equation if it is re-formulated in a different way, but this is more a trial and error process. It would be good if SAGE gave a warning in the case that it didn't manage to solve an equation, otherwise one thinks the output is the solution and only realises later that the variable to be solved for still appears in the output. Do you know if anyone is working on the solver in sage or is it all done by maxima?
