Semi-resolved: I was browsing the Sage reference manual, which I get in a
new window when I click "Help" and experimenting in there. That is where I
get the black jmol screens, although everything else works fine there.

I just discovered that If I work instead in my own notebook in the original
Firefox window it works fine.

It looks as if when I'm in the reference manual Jmol thinks it is rendering
the graphics, but the graphics are not being put in the Jmol window. So it
seems to be a bug, but it is not clear to me whose bug this is -- sage,
Jmol, java, or Firefox.
