I think you have to tell debian to use the Sun's java by default:

  $ sudo update-alternatives --config java

  (Choose "java", not "gij??".)

Maybe when you purged the java packages and reinstalled, you were only
left with Sun's java, and so it was set as default...  (Just a guess.)
