They do work, and they work very very well. I've used them a lot in the past, and it's one of vmware's key features. That said, it is not trivial to set them up, and you'll need to probably ask on the vmware forums or read vmware docs, and/or learn something about Linux. Also this is much easier to setup with vmware workstation (not free) instead of vmware player.
