Wait, I just tried to repeat the install from scratch and this time it
worked (I didn't try to compile anything...just entered the directory
and typed ./sage)

The thing that put me on the wrong track is that the README file
inside the package contains instructions on how to *compile* Sage: so
I instinctlively followed them, assuming there was a part of the
installation process that required some compilation...)

Anyway, thank you for your help, I really appreciated it!
