I've posted a new spkg.  Do

     sage -i matplotlib-0.91.1

Does it build for you?

This will break *some* plotting functionality, since I still need to
make some fixes to
the Sage plot.py file to accamodate changes in matplotlib.

if you want to go back to the previous matplotlib do

    sage -f matplotlib-0.90.0.p5
