It's fine to just install dvipng using your package manager, e.g., apt-get install dvipng. Fortunately, in this particular case it's not at all necessary that you install the sage optional package! You sound like you're pretty good at working with vmware images and ubuntu... It would be great to get some help on improving sage-vmware!
