There is also a new release of Pyx (a python package) that is supposed to do 3d graphics and works very very well with tex: http://pyx.sourceforge.net/ I haven't tried the new version yet. But basically, you have to tell your colleague that "No, unfortunately Sage doesn't do what you need with 3d graphics yet, but that the developers are well aware of this need."
