This actually isn't really a Sage question per se, but I know the answer
anyways.  In Kubuntu go K Menu --> System Settings, the seelct
the "Default Applications" icon in the first row.  click the "Web browser"
line on the left.  Under the "Default Component" box change the
button to "in the following browser", and in the blank type "firefox".
Then it should work correctly in Sage.

what xdg-open does.   E.g.,
  xdg-open http://sagemath.org
# before that would open knonquerror
Now,
  xdg-open http://sagemath.org
# will open firefox.
