Dear Michael and William, Thank you for your help (and for the incredibly speedy response). Yes, I'm perfectly happy with the SAGE 2.8.10 binary, which I've installed, and which is working.
Yes, as you inferred, I do have gmp-4.2.1 in my /usr/local directory; I guess this caused the build problem. I have a separate question about some of the algorithms used by SAGE and some competitors; I'll ask about it under a different thread. Thanks again!
