There's really no change between sage-2.3.x vmware and sage-2.8.x vmware except in sage itself. Nothing about the vmware machine, networking, etc. has changed. Also, I've tested the2.8.5 vmware machine and John Voight has also and reported it works. So you'll have to provide more debugging information or ?? I don't know. VMware can be finicky. There are 2-3 networking options (NAT, local only, etc.). Try them.
