Your problem might be "non-UTF chars in pathnames" see
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.lisp.clisp.general/11786 and then
http://clisp.cons.org/impnotes/faq.html#faq-enc-err
Can you do a "pwd" in $SAGE_ROOT and post the output here. Please also
try moving $SAGE_ROOT to /tmp and try again.
