I've experienced a similar problem using the notebook in 2.7.1 in gap mode: every once in a while, input cells stop showing any output. When this happens, I select "Restart" and then "Evaluate All" from the "Action" menu, and then things are usually fixed. In my case, it doesn't appear to be easily reproducible.
