That's very annoying.  What happens when you:

 (1) login as sage and type "notebook()"
 (2) login as manage (or admin) and type "sudo notebook" at the command line?
 (3) login as manage (or admin) and try to ssh somewhere.
 (4) login as manage (or admin) and type "su - notebook"

My guess is that you don't have vmware networking setup correctly. It's
needed to use the notebook, and the notebook login probably show a
quick (milliseconds) error message because of lack of networking, then
returns to the login prompt.
