Hi Karl-Dieter, AIMS runs on a Northern hemisphere schedule. Roughly September 1 through May. Some of the lecturers from the UK have three weeks of their time donated by their university so they can come and lecture for that period.
The first few months the students take two courses at a time, each meeting two hours a day for three weeks. These "skills" courses are meant to get everybody off to a good start, fill in some gaps in their background, let the Francophones improve their English skills, etc. As such they are graded pass/fail. The next phase are more specialized "review" courses. Again, these run three weeks at a time, but now three courses are offered and the students attend two of their choice, allowing them to follow their interests. The year ends with about a two-month period where the students write a substantial essay and present it to external examiners. AIMS has a definite emphasis on modeling, and their research center has programs in financial mathematics, biomathematics and cosmology. There is also a significant part of the curriculum devoted to physics, eg right now there is an electricity and magnetism course. However, the new centers will have different emphases. For example, Senegal will focus on strengths in algebra and cryptography. Knowledge of, or experience with, teaching an area of mathematics using Sage is definitely a desirable skill for an AIMS lecturer. I made a concerted effort to introduce several non-trivial examples using linear algebra and Sage in my course, which the students appreciated, such as image compression using singular value decompositions. I'd guess some more specialized expertise would be necessary for the review courses. Yes, Marshall Hampton is another Sage developer who has taught at AIMS.
