I used source code, not binary. Yes, from the tarball.
I tried with "gcc version 7.2.0 (GCC)" and got same error message.
I am actually using csh, not bash.
OS info:
uname -m = x86_64
uname -r = 3.0.101-108.13.1.14249.0.PTF-default
uname -s = Linux

I did run configure before running make.
There are some errors in the config.log file though the final line shows it
passed.
#define HAVE_MEMORY_H 1
#define HAVE_STRINGS_H 1
#define HAVE_INTTYPES_H 1
#define HAVE_STDINT_H 1
#define HAVE_UNISTD_H 1
#define HAVE_LIBM 1
#define HAVE_CXX11 1
#define HAVE_ZMQ /**/

configure: exit 0

Some errors in the config.log file:

Thread model: posix
gcc version 7.2.0 (GCC)
configure:4218: $? = 0
configure:4207: gcc -V >&5
gcc: error: unrecognized command line option '-V'
gcc: fatal error: no input files
compilation terminated.
configure:4218: $? = 1
configure:4207: gcc -qversion >&5
gcc: error: unrecognized command line option '-qversion'; did you mean
'--version'?
gcc: fatal error: no input files
compilation terminated.
