The build was successful. In earlier attempts I had not run make distclean. This time I used
make distclean ./configure FC=gfortran-7 make and the build went through. It seems that using make distclean has helped to do the job. Maybe it has helped to remove some files from earlier unsuccessful attempts. As far as I can see I don't have multiple gfortrans installed and gfortran-7 seems to be correctly installed.
