In a nutshell: break MPFR building, then do `./sage -f mpir`, and you will see MPFR starting (and failing) to build. I have seen this many times on FreeBSD and now see it on Solaris. I'll investigate more and open a ticket (it might be that you need /bin/sh != bash for this...)
