certainly 16 Gb is more than enough to build Sage. I guess that you might be trying to do a parallel build, and this somehow does not work (I saw systems grinding to a halt if you do something like make -j8 on a 4-core system). I suggest that after the building stops you re-run make as follows: make -j1 This should restart from the place where it stopped, and uses only one core.
