it appears to be a bug in our Lisp/Maxima version combo:
Maxima 5.39.0 http://maxima.sourceforge.net
using Lisp ECL 16.1.2

In fact in 
Maxima 5.40.0 http://maxima.sourceforge.net
using Lisp SBCL 1.3.18

I obtain an answer:
