I am not sure about brokenness (I said "probably"). The system is OpenSuSE Leap 42.2 with Sage's gcc. When I wrote the above I got a Sage crash with "Matrix(ZZ, sys.maxsize, sys.maxsize)" on 8.1.beta7. I can no longer reproduce it.
