Installing worked well on VMWare for me, as this is the only one we are allowed on our desktops. The instructions are however outdated. What worked was to create an empty VM and install using a DVD image of the regular FreeBSD installer. And no host extensions worked, but you do not need them for purely command line work; you can just ssh into the VM.
