Both options have merit. If most people think we should have a user-friendly error for a common mistake (mismatched dimensions), then maybe it makes sense to add an ignore_dims (default: False) parameter for the people who expect the dimensions to differ occasionally? The alternative is to repeat the dimension checks yourself, and that's a little annoying.
