FWIW, I get the same error, but I definitely do not have java installed. Do you also get, as I do, an alert saying "To use the "java" command-line tool you need to install a JDK." If not, it may be that your java install is not accessible. I assume this is the command-line version of sage that you are running. Can you run java from the command-line, independent of sage?
