If there be are any Sage devs who lately have felt too successful and/or
appreciate, here's some cold water for your next shower.

I teach a class where students learn some "advanced" math topics using
Sage. Naturally, talking about Sage is part of that. I gave a test today,
with the following T/F question that I *thought* would be easy:

Sage is the work of a bunch of hobbyists working from their parents'
> basements.

You probably know where this is going...

I'm about halfway through, and *no one* has gotten full credit on the
problem. To be fair, two people marked it False, but they were also
supposed to provide a true statement. One provided no statement, and the
other -- I am not making this up, I swear! -- wrote:

False, it is the work of hobbyists working *from their own basements.*

QED: I am either a failure as a teacher or they decided to tweak me, and
since the grades aren't that bad, it can't be the "failure" option. I'll
take your answers "off the air" as I think a good, tall drink is in order.
(Cherry coke; I don't do the hard stuff.)

john perry

PS: In case you're wondering, yes, I do cover how Sage started on something
like the first or second day of class, and bring up from time to time that
it's based on scientific grants and the hard work of researchers. Either my
students tune me out in those occasional moments or, as I say, they hate
me...
