6.7 is old. Try 6.9.
E.g I see that in (forthcoming) 6.10 it should be OK:
sage: version()
'SageMath Version 6.10.beta3, Release Date: 2015-11-05'
sage: abs(-sqrt(2))
sqrt(2)
sage: abs(-pi)
pi
