I like AUTHORS but only for the "real" authors, i.e. those who really do 
contribute a significant amount or new functionality.  I don't think I've 
ever put myself on them because my contributions are usually relatively 
minor or refactoring or whatever.  But it's useful for an end user who we 
should not expect to be using the git repo - especially if it directs them 
to someone they can pump for information on the latest and greatest version 
of functionality X.  Don't forget those end users :)
