Well right now it is since a "binary" is just a tarred source tree with 
artifacts.

What would be your preference for <interface>.version()?

Output as string whatever the interfaced program uses (or most commonly 
uses). I don't really see a need for making it consistent between different 
interfaces, whatever that even means.
