I'd also try to rule out:
 * cross-platform tools (or other strange things) that you might have
installed in
/usr/local or somewhere else in your PATH;
* remains of old multilib toolchain (if you upgraded your system from
something old);
* old  64-bit processor (like Intel Core2Duo) which might confuse the
config system.
