It doesn't get messier over time, its more of a steady state. 

You either make the history more difficult to understand, or you make 
developing more difficult. We chose the former, in particular since many 
potential contributors don't understand the finer points of git.

In practice its not a big deal that the git DAG is messy, you just need to 
tell git to look at the right subgraph. to understand whats going on.
