I have personally mostly eliminated the use of LD_LIBRARY_PATH from my linux cluster in favour of coding runpath in programs and libraries so that it is never an issue (the only exception would be openfoam I think). In the case of gcc, it means changing the specs (as in gcc -dumpspecs) to enforce its own runpath at compile time. You have to patch gcc sources to achieve this but I recommend it. The only case where it doesn’t work is when ld is called directly rather than through the compiler.
