Hmm, wait a minute ... I seem to remember William explaining to me that a copyright text referring to "just" the GPL would essentially imply that one could choose from the GPL web site whatever version of the license one wanted. Currently GPL v1, GPL v2, GPL v3 are the available ones. I think I can find that thread (should have been on sage-devel) given enough time (which I might have in the evening, but not now, it's afternoon when I write these lines). But would this really answer our question at hand? Possibly ... (but maybe in an unexpected way).
