No, I am not personally resenting anything. I am referring to a sort of urban legend along these lines. But in this case I am saying that it is possible that someone else implements an algorithm you came up with; this seems very different from patent situations (but IANAL). I suppose it would be similar if one implemented it oneself in software that one later didn't have access to, though; certainly I could imagine a grad student writing a program for Magma that is actually incorporated into it, and then that student ended up not getting a job at a place where they could afford Magma with their startup funds. Rick's example is related, especially if said software was upgraded and then was no longer free to that author.
