It would seem that there's a problem with Binutils. I basically have the same OS and gcc but with different hardware. However I have
$ ld -v GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Ubuntu) 2.22 and the linking is good. I had some other hiccups, mainly with cvxopt, when building 6.1.1 but eventually the build completed.
