I also cannot read the post in question with slrn, but it has to do with Google Groups (thank you, google, for being to text-unfriendly, why on Earth you must base64 text?!) encoding it in a way not understood by "normal" news readers. Still it's a good example of why UTF-8 is evil in such contexts... So any post quoting that beautiful, beautiful UTF-8 banner will be base64-encoded by Google Groups and unreadable in slrn without extra hoops jumping.
