You should check the matplotlib web pages; if I remember, they have pretty 
good documentation.

Meanwhile, you can also try installing Sage after setting then environment 
variable SAGE_MATPLOTLIB_GUI to "yes". In theory, that should build GUI 
support into matplotlb.
