Just a quick note: the fact that P in Fields() triggers P.is_field()
is only there because I did not want to handle yet another backward
compatibility issue when I refactored the precategory code four years
ago. But I have thought we should get rid of it at some point.

Due to the Sage Days here, it might take a couple days before I answer
the other points.
