Setting SAGE_ATLAS_LIB creates a symlink to the underlying atlas install. Don't use it if you want to distribute the result.
Having said that, I'm thinking about a more flexible system for deploying and using blas/lapack. I'll probably post to sage-devel about that soon.
"apt-get install" is all it takes... and it comes with explanations how to recompile the package for maximum performance.
What I find especially stupid is that building atlas takes most of the time, when I really know: (1) I'm not needing a perfectly optimized library to the point that compiling for days makes sense ; (2) I'm going to make a bdist which people will run on different systems where those optimizations are perhaps worse than what a more generic package would have given!
Something like "export SAGE_ATLAS_DONT_OVERDO_IT=yes" would be wonderful. I'm looking forward to your announce.
