Because the Sage Notebook automatically tries to fire up a graphical
browser (which I bet you don't have on Ubuntu Server) with an auth token.

Probably because the SSL certificate is not signed by an authority
recognized by Firefox... But do you really need to use SSL working on your
own local machine?
