I've created http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/13144 for this.
We could just apply it only on FreeBSD, for instance.
I had responses from the email you just cited, and so I went ahead and
created a ticket here:

So your ticket is a duplicate.
I think this patch should be applied to all operating systems. I think
it is just a matter of luck that other operating systems were not hit by
this bug.
