Is there anything useful in the system logs (in particular, in
/var/log/system.log and /var/log/secure.log) from around the time you got this
error?

Apple's approach to user error messages has always been to not bother the user
with any of the pesky details beyond a mild "I'm sorry, Dave; I can't do that"
indicator. The system logs can often have useful stuff, if you can weed out
the irrelevant useful stuff.
